Silk top is made from the cocoons of Bombyx Mori silkworms, or wild Tussah, Eri or other wild types of silkworms. The Bombyx Mori silkworms produce white silk while the wild silkworms make various shades of beige. Sometimes Tussah is bleached white.
Silk tops are made by de-gumming the cocoons, then carding and combing. In combing the short fibers, noils, are removed. The remaining long fibers are lined up parallel to each other.
